In the 1960s, the intelligence services of the five English-speaking NATO countries launched a joint project to intercept satellite communications. The network of listening stations, dubbed ECHELON, would span the globe over the next three decades and become the focus of not only numerous conspiracy theories but also a European Parliament investigation into the allies’ alleged industrial espionage.
