Adrian Dabrowski & Gabriel Gegenhuber: SIM Tunneling and Attacks on Mobile Networks

Duration: 44min 50sec Type: Presentation (lecture) Playlist: 35 of 146 in Defcon
A DEF CON 31 talk on MobileAtlas — an open platform for mobile network research that allows a SIM card to be remotely connected to a modem anywhere in the world, enabling testing across different operators without physically moving devices.

Using this system, the researchers uncovered vulnerabilities in real-world mobile networks, including billing flaws that allow free internet access, weaknesses in IPv6 firewalls, and hidden communication between SIM cards and their home networks.

They also demonstrate how users can be tracked via signal characteristics during roaming voice calls.
